There are some food events in Brisbane that you just can’t miss, and Regional Flavours at South Bank tops the list.
If you want to find out what is happening in food around Queensland, this is the place to go. It is on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. Be there!

Who’s there at Regional Flavours?
This year’s presenter line-up includes lots of Queensland stars including chefs Spencer Patrick from Harrison’s in Port Douglas, Katrina Ryan from the Golden Pig, Richard Ousby from Stokehouse, Josue Lopez from Emporium Hotel and Lulu Purnell who makes the best brownies at I Heart Brownies.
Who are the regional champions?
It is fabulous to see chefs of exceptionally high standing representing their favourite Queensland regions. It’s not just a nod either, these chefs are closely associated with the areas, often living in the district and really know their produce. Look out for Cameron Matthews and Alejandro Cancino representing the Sunshine Coast, Matt Golinski representing the Gympie Region, Jason Ford as South Burnett Ambassador and Brenda Fawdon for the Scenic Rim.
Do we really need these guys?
There are the same ‘big’ name chefs – Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Miguel Maestre – but I really wonder why we need them when our homegrown talent is so good.
My Regional Flavours top five
- Queensland Taste Stage I would like to see Spencer Patrick reinventing classics on the Queensland Taste Stage 11.30 on Saturday. The entire program for this stage is a stunning use of local produce at its best by chefs who really know what they are doing. I want to eat it all!
- Queensland Taste Marketplace Get lost in the 80 stalls here filled with the best produce from around the state. It’s a chance to chat with the locals from each region and hear how they are going. Take a bag for your purchases or better still, take someone to carry them all. You will leave laden.
- Future food I often gaze into my crystal ball to see what’s happening in the future for food. This line up is all about what is going to be on your plate looking ahead for the next 30 years. It is sure to be interesting.
- River Quay Regional Flavours is such a buzzy day it is good to have an escape zone. Perched on a grassy bank overlooking the river is where I want to flop when I need a break.
- Main stage Katherine Sabbath is my pick from the Main Stage line up. Katherine is charming and down to earth. She makes her fabulous cakes look easy to make. I loved eating her raw, bean and refined sugar-free rainbow cake – really!
Where is Regional Flavours?
Head to Brisbane’s South Bank. There are access points all along Little Stanley Street.
I’ll be there bright and early Sunday morning. It’s the best way to beat the crowds. Say hello if you see me!
