Along with ‘Where is the toilet?’, ‘Can I have a coffee?’ is one of those phrases that every traveller needs to know especially for International Coffee Day.

Wherever you are in the world, coffee is likely to be a big part of the culture. After all, it’s the second most traded commodity, only behind oil for some countries.

The most significant rule in coffee language is to stir things up. Don’t just stick to your usual extra-large cappuccino when you travel the world. Experiencing local coffee recipes will broaden your horizons so much more than following a map across the tourist route.

Try the egg yolk and condensed milk coffee in Vietnam or have your hot coffee poured over cheese curd in Finland. There’s also the Irish whiskey shot added to coffee in – you guessed it – Ireland.  In Hong Kong, you can sit on the fence with the tea drinkers as they combine your coffee with milky black tea.

Of course, the best news about coffee is that you don’t have to leave home to appreciate its global phenomenon.
