Queensland Café of the Year 2019, Farm House Kedron brings the country back to the burbs with quirky theming and farm to table food.  The cafe also topped the state’s 2020 Top Cafes list.

From a strong list of Cafe of the Year finalists that included some of my favourite breakfast spots such as the delightful Freja’s at Wilston,  the mouthwatering Bam Bam Bakehouse on the Gold Coast at Mermaid Beach, Halo Ground in Bowen Hills, Jam Pantry at Greenslopes, and The Shak Organic Cafe on Buderim in the Sunshine Coast, Farm House Kedron emerged to trump the field.

It has happened again in 2020 with The Courier-Mail’s Queensland Top 50 Cafes list.

I’ve enjoyed breakfast at Farm House many times. It’s always a pleasure to eat the full-flavoured, farm-sourced food served with professionalism, even when things get hectic. Take a look here on a Sunday morning, and you’ll know what I mean by busy as there is often an extended queue of people waiting for a table.

Long-time Brisbane hospitality star Amanda Scott (Gertie’s, Continental Café and Café Conti), made over a corrugated iron shed formerly occupied by much-loved Farmer Joe’s to create Farm House.

Building on her Milk Bar Café Ashgrove empire, Amanda sourced an amazing array of ‘country’ objects adding atmosphere to what was once a pretty basic shed. There are log stools, a table made from a tree stump and slate platters shaped like cows and pigs to serve food.

Amanda explains that her country roots have a strong family connection, and she wants to look after our fabulous farmers.

The local approach also applies to the staff. They just happen to be made up of Amanda’s children and her landlord’s children, plus a United Nations assortment of willing workers.

What’s on the menu at this Queensland Cafe of the Year?

The breakfast menu includes free-range Nindigully eggs, organic sourdough, house-made relish and hotcakes topped with Miss Sophia’s own gelato.

Gnocchi with thick-cut bacon, spinach and a free-range egg in a chilli sauce is hard to beat, but there’s always the cheesy two potato cake with hollandaise.

Lunch includes heartier options such as 12-hour braised beef cheek ragout, crisp coconut whiting with chunky chips or the Farm House burger.  You can still have the gnocchi (thank goodness) and the vegan three-grain green bowl.

For dessert, just check out the tempting range at Miss Sophia’s Gelateria.  How can you resist flavours like cream brulee, warm Cadbury chocolate or fresh fruit of the day.

It’s order and pay at the till with a bonus that there’s no problem with separate bills.  Water is served you from a country-style spigot on the front veranda.

Food ethics at Farm House

As you would hope for a Queensland Café of the Year, Farm House also has strong food ethics.

Their orange marmalade is made from their own trees in Ashgrove. The milk is from the co-op so they can serve Queensland Milk. It’s all local herbs, local edible flowers and free-range eggs.

Bio-degradable take away containers are part of their effort to keep up with environmental concerns and lighten their environmental footprint.

Where is Farm House Kedron?

Find Farm House at 9 Somerset Road, Kedron, just off Gympie Road. It’s open daily for breakfast and closes late afternoon.

This Queensland Cafe of the Year is a child-friendly venue with a special spot for small people and a children’s menu. It’s also suitable for fur children, so bring your dogs.

This is another clever dining option from a seasoned hospitality veteran designed to tick all the café boxes.

Bottom line:  Prices range from $12 to $20.

Best tip: Plenty of street parking here but also some on the site.
