How does Farmhouse Kedron continue to reign supreme among Brisbane’s Best Cafés?  Well, if you ask owner Amanda Scott, you’ll hear that it all started as a dream first date that surprised everyone by turning into a long-term love affair.

Farmhouse Kedron stands tall among Brisbane’s Best Cafes

Fresh from winning Restaurant & Catering Australia’s Best Breakfast Restaurant in SEQ 2024, Farmhouse Kedron has been nominated in a new list of Brisbane’s top 25 cafes from The Courier-Mail. A consistent mention on any list of Brisbane’s best cafes, this latest recognition comes on top winning of the Healthy Kids Menu Award in 2022 and 2023, Restaurant and Catering Association Queensland Café of the Year 2019 and topping the state’s 2020 Top Cafes list.

I’ve enjoyed breakfast at Farm House many times. It’s always a pleasure to eat the full-flavoured, farm-sourced food served with professionalism, even when things get hectic. Take a look here on a Sunday morning, and you’ll know what I mean by busy as there is often an extended queue of people waiting for a table.

Long-time Brisbane hospitality stars Amanda and John Scott (Gertie’s, Continental Café, Café Conti, Milk Bar), made over a corrugated iron shed formerly occupied by much-loved Farmer Joe’s to create Farm House.

It started as a fantasy

Amanda says Farmhouse Kedron started as a fantasy. After many years running restaurants and then Milk Bar at Ashgrove, the Scott family had an idea for something different.

“Opening Farmhouse was akin to a first date.,” said Amanda, “which surprised us all by turning into a long-term love affair.

“We built it in a building that was the relic of a much-loved family business, Farmer Joe’s.  The old shed still had a positive spirit that permeates to this day.  We have been blessed with a remarkable local community, whom we strive to never let down… and the most generous-spirited regular guests and for some reason, we attract a wonderful team to work there.  Some of the team have been with us since the inception of Farmhouse, and a few have been with us even longer.

“We all come from all over the world, and we share a desire to not lose the little bit of fear in the depths of our gut every day that says, ‘Will we disappoint our guests today? ‘ Let’s really, really not! Let’s get going! How can we delight them today?”

Farmhouse Kedron’s secret to success

In an economic climate where many hospitality venues struggle to keep their doors open, I asked Amanda Scott what advice she would give to struggling cafe owners.

Amanda says the most important rules for running any business are the same as the most important rules for life.

“Treat every single person you encounter in every facet of your life, the way you yourself would like to be treated,” said Amanda. “And never, ever think that the money in the bank is yours. Know your financial position every single week. Don’t wait a month, a quarter or a year to know who and what you owe.

“Or, as my mother taught me about running her businesses, “Good manners and good housekeeping, darling”.”

What’s on the menu at one of Brisbane’s Best Cafes?

The breakfast menu here goes beyond eggs on toast and smashed avo, although you will find versions of both available. Instead, it takes you on a culinary journey with breakfast potato gnocchi complete with thick-cut bacon and soft poached eggs and a breakfast salad that combines roasted pumpkin and ruby red grapefruit, also with a poached egg!

Crowd favourites include the Crispy Cheese Potato Cake which has been on the menu for seven years and will not be moving and a breakfast pinsa (pizza) with hand-stretched dough poached eggs,
bacon, potato, mozzarella, Farmhouse sweet chilli, rosemary, and capsicum.

For Biscoff fans, there is a banana pancake with indulgent Biscoff mascarpone, butterscotch sauce, and seasonal berries—yes, please!

Four vegan dishes plus more vegetarian options cover a wide range of dietary options.

After noon, the menu moves into lunch options, which include corned beef toasties, beef burgers and chips, pizzas, gnocchi, and more potato cake. The cafe is licensed from 10 a.m.

Taking care of smaller customers is the award winning heathy Little Farmers menu for children under the age of nine years.  Think toast soldiers, pancakes and smoothies.

Farmhouse Kedron and food ethics

As you would hope for one of Brisbane’s best cafes, Farmhouse  Kedron also has strong food ethics. Their orange marmalade is made from trees in Ashgrove. The milk is from the co-op, so they can serve Queensland Milk. The food is all local herbs, edible flowers, and free-range eggs. Biodegradable takeaway containers are part of their effort to address environmental concerns and lighten their environmental footprint.

Where is Farmhouse Kedron?

Farmhouse Kedron is located at 9 Somerset Road, Kedron, just off Gympie Road. It’s open daily for breakfast and closes mid afternoon. This cafe is a child-friendly venue with a special spot for small people and a children’s menu. It’s also suitable for fur children, so bring your dogs.

This is another clever dining option from a seasoned hospitality veteran designed to tick all the café boxes.  If you like Farmhouse, try their brother cafe Oh Boy, Bok Choy!

Best tip: Plenty of street parking here but also some on the site.
