Plan Your Trip to Winton

Winton is a remote outback town in Central Western Queensland, famously known as the gateway to Australia’s Dinosaur Country. Surrounded by the vast, sunburnt landscapes of the Channel Country, this historic town is around 1,350 kilometres northwest of Brisbane and about 600 kilometres from the coast. While it may feel like the middle of nowhere, getting to Winton is part of the adventure. You can fly into Longreach or Winton, drive the scenic outback highways, or hop aboard the Spirit of the Outback train to Longreach and connect by road. From there, Rangelands Outback Camp provides a comfortable transfer service, whisking guests from the town centre into the heart of the rugged mesa landscape.

Luxury Tents with Views for Days

Calling them tents almost feels rude. Each solar-powered luxury tent is a designer dream, complete with a king-sized bed, air conditioning, and plush linens you’ll struggle to leave. The en-suite bathroom features a rainwater shower with an outback view—yes, you can shampoo under the stars. There’s WiFi (if you must), Mukti Organics toiletries, daily housekeeping, and a private deck perfect for your morning cuppa or golden hour G&T.

Need a moment of solitude? These oversized sanctuaries offer it in spades, letting you commune with the outback without giving up creature comforts.

Dining Under Desert Skies

The food at Rangelands Outback Camp is a highlight—because glamping and gourmet go hand-in-hand here. Each night, guests gather for sunset drinks and canapés on the Sunset Deck, where pink skies melt into the horizon.

Then it’s off to The Mahal, a chic lounge and dining tent where the onsite chef crafts multi-course meals that bring outback ingredients to life. Expect local produce, big flavours, and thoughtful wine pairings from the generous open bar. Dietary requirements? No worries—just let the team know.

Breakfasts are just as impressive, fuelling your dinosaur-hunting days with chef-prepared dishes and coffee good enough to rival your favourite café back home.

Rangelands Outback Camp’s Chef’s Table Events

Food lovers, take note—Rangelands Outback Camp’s Chef’s Table Events are back for 2025 and hotter than a billy on the boil. Following the sell-out success of 2024, these exclusive three-night gourmet getaways will once again feature the culinary brilliance of celebrated Australian chef Philip Johnson, the maestro behind Brisbane’s iconic e’cco bistro. Mark your calendars for 23–26 June, or 28–31 July, and prepare for an unforgettable fusion of outback adventure and fine dining.

You’ll stay in a luxury tent with all the trimmings, wake up to gourmet breakfasts served with epic views, and indulge in three dazzling dinners crafted by a Good Food Guide-hatted chef. Evenings are enhanced with fine wines, premium beers, and canapés at sunset, while days bring guided explorations of the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry, Rangelands Rifts, and a spectacular Spirit of Evolution projection on ancient rock walls. Return transfers from Longreach Airport are included—just bring your appetite for wild landscapes and wildly good food.

What to Do in Winton’s Wild Heart

While it’s tempting to stay put in your tented bliss, the land around Rangelands Station is rich with ancient stories and unique adventures:

  • Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry: See 3,300 dinosaur footprints frozen in time—a true prehistoric chase scene from 95 million years ago.
  • Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum: Get up close with the largest collection of Australian dinosaur bones and watch fossil preparation in action.
  • Rangelands Rifts: Exclusive to camp guests, this natural wonder is a maze of dramatic rock corridors carved over millennia (film buffs will recognise it from The Proposition).
  • Winton’s Open-Air Cinema: Catch a classic under the stars at one of Australia’s last original canvas-seat cinemas.
  • Bladensburg National Park: Hike to Skull Hole Gorge or Scrammy Gorge for striking outback scenery and wildlife spotting.

Practical Tips for Your Glamping Getaway

  • Stay 3–4 nights to soak up all the dinosaur action and outback serenity.
  • Pack for comfort: light hiking shoes for exploring, casual daywear, and warm layers for chilly winter nights.
  • Stay connected: Telstra service works in most parts of the camp, but trust us—you’ll want to disconnect.
  • Smart casual for dinner: You’ll want to look good while enjoying that wine pairing under the stars.
  • About those mozzies and flies. I found that a CinnaBalm stick was best for deterring mozzies and then stopping the itch.  Nature’s Botanical Rosemary & Cedarwood Personal Insect Repellent cream was useful in deterring flies, but must be applied every hour when they are bad.

The Final Word

Rangelands Outback Camp delivers the kind of once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll talk about long after your boots are dusty. It’s glamping at its most indulgent—with a side of dinosaurs, dramatic landscapes, and desert skies that dazzle after dark.

If you’re ready to trade traffic noise for wind-whispers through spinifex, and room service for rainwater showers with a view, this is the ultimate escape. Just beware—you may never look at a hotel room the same way again.
