When I touched down in Hervey Bay after a quick 50-minute flight from Brisbane, I had no idea just how much adventure could be packed into a five-day Fraser Coast itinerary. If you’re wondering about the best things to do in Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast, let me take you through my own road-tested journey. From breathtaking Hervey Bay whale watching, to bouncing along sandy tracks on a K’gari Fraser Island tour, and Lady Elliot Island snorkelling with turtles, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. Add in a helicopter scenic flight over Hervey Bay, plates piled with fresh local seafood, and stays at inviting resorts including Kingfisher Bay K’gari, and you’ve got the ultimate Fraser Coast itinerary — one I’d happily do all over again tomorrow.

Plan Your Visit to Hervey Bay

Getting to Hervey Bay is refreshingly simple, which makes it the perfect gateway to the Fraser Coast. Located about 290 kilometres north of Brisbane in Queensland, Hervey Bay is best known as Australia’s whale-watching capital and the jumping-off point for K’gari Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island.

I hopped on a quick 50-minute Qantas flight from Brisbane, landing right in the heart of town with plenty of time to start exploring. Jetstar flies direct from both Sydney and Melbourne—perfect for Victorians and southerners seeking a seamless gateway to the Fraser Coast. If you prefer a road trip, the drive from Brisbane takes around 3½ hours via the Bruce Highway, winding through charming country towns along the way.

First stop on your Fraser Coast itinerary – a sunset cruise with Fraser Island Boat Charters

Day 1 – Hervey Bay Whale Watching at Sunset

A quick 50-minute Qantas hop from Brisbane lands you in Hervey Bay, the whale-watching capital of Australia. I checked into my Hervey Bay accommodation at the Ramada Hervey Bay, just a short walk from the marina, before heading straight out on a sunset sail. My spacious, comfortable room was in the second story of the rear building, which overlooks the pool. It had a small balcony, and if I had more time, relaxing there would have been a pleasure.

Hervey Bay wasted no time in showing off its magic. A playful young whale rolled lazily through the waves, flicking its tail and fins beneath a sky painted pink and gold. I was lucky enough to be previewing Hervey Bay’s new “Wake Up with the Whales” experience with Fraser Island Boat Charters — and it’s every bit as enchanting as it sounds. Imagine one, two, or more nights sailing at your own pace, with whales as your sunrise and sunset companions. Skipper Scott shared some of his favourite encounters so far: sipping his morning coffee as a curious whale sidled up, or another that lingered long enough to “watch” The Hangover on the front deck screen (the jury’s still out on whether it followed the plot!). With three cosy cabins — ideal for families or groups of friends, or bookable individually if you’re after a solo adventure — this experience is pure magic. The highlight? Drifting to sleep with whale song echoing from the ocean below. Truly priceless.

Dinner followed at Bayswater Bar & Grill, where Hervey Bay scallops were the only sensible choice.

Why it works: Flying in or arriving mid-afternoon means you can squeeze in an adventure on your first day of Hervey Bay whale watching, and nothing sets the tone like a whale-tail salute at sunset.

Day 2 – K’gari Fraser Island Tours & Natural Wonders

Spend the day on a guided 4WD adventure exploring Lake Mackenzie, 75 Mile Beach, and the Maheno Shipwreck. Staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort makes this the easiest way to experience the island.

A short ferry ride delivered me to  Kingfisher Bay Resort, gateway to the world’s largest sand island for a K’gari Fraser Island tour. Guided by the legendary Peter Meyer, we explored K’gari in a K’gari Explorer Tours 4WD bus. Unless you have your own 4WD, a bus tour makes the perfect way to explore the island and more Hervey Bay whale watching.

Highlights included:

  • Lake Mackenzie – cooler than a bath, warmer than the ocean, and absolutely swim-worthy.
  • 75 Mile Beach – the Maheno Shipwreck, Eli Creek (where I floated downstream in a tube, giggling like a kid), and the rainbow-striped coloured sands.
  • Wildlife wonders – sea eagles, dingoes (including a nursing mother), and a whale just offshore.
  • Rainforest wander – exploring the dense rainforest around Central Station.

Dinner at the newly opened, Asian inspired Dune Restaurant was followed by Illumina, a spectacular light show projected onto the ancient wollum. Then it was off to my lagoon-view room at Kingfisher Bay Resort, where sleep came easy. The next morning, I found out I had missed one of my favourite desserts, mochi, at Dune. Cue sad face.

Why it works: K’gari is a sensory overload with rainforest, beaches, shipwrecks, and wildlife all in one day. Staying on the island makes it seamless and lets you soak in the magic after the day-trippers depart, and see the Illumina show, which is truly amazing.  I’m still wondering how they achieved some of those light effects.

Day 3 – Lady Elliot Island Snorkelling & Turtles

After farewelling K’gari, it was back to the mainland and into the sky. A short scenic flight Hervey Bay to Lady Elliot Island, perched on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef lands you in reef paradise. Here, snorkelling alongside turtles, vibrant coral, and schools of tropical fish is the star attraction.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs, and you can walk in and be swimming amongst them in just minutes.  It’s a favourite with scuba divers, but you can still get a great experience just Lady Elliot Island snorkelling or even from the glass-bottomed boat.

A buffet lunch set the tone before a buggy transfer took us to the beach. From there, a boat ride delivered us straight into turtle territory. Swimming beside a giant green turtle, surrounded by darting fish and vibrant coral, was the definition of a bucket-list tick.  We also saw a huge manta ray swimming just below the surface of the water.  So majestic as it swam across the sea bottom.

Back on the mainland, I checked my Hervey Bay accommodation at Akama Resort. These spacious apartments are perfect for unwinding and suitable for family groups.  I loved the large glass windows in the bedroom, which meant I could lie back and stargaze while tucked up in bed.

I rounded off the day with dinner at Odyssey Bistro, one of Hervey Bay’s hidden gems, where the menu reads like a love letter to the Fraser Coast. At Odyssey, every dish tells the story of local growers, fishers, and producers who pour their heart into sustainable, small-scale food.

The menu changes monthly, shaped by whatever is freshest and most vibrant — think silky seafood straight from nearby waters, vegetables bursting with colour from regional farms, and plates that marry creativity with care. It’s the kind of place where you don’t just eat dinner, you taste the essence of the region, one beautiful bite at a time

Why it works: The back-to-back island combo delivers maximum wow factor for your Fraser Coast itinerary  — rainforest one day, reef the next — and gives you two UNESCO-listed wonders in one trip.

Day 4 – The Best Whale Encounters in Hervey Bay

Morning swim with whales on a small safari boat, followed by a large-deck cruise in the afternoon. Two very different but equally unforgettable Hervey Bay whale watching ways to connect with these gentle giants.

If you’ve ever doubted whale-watching hype, Hervey Bay will make you a believer. These whales stop to rest and play, making encounters up close and deeply personal.

In the morning, I joined Salty Safaris, a small-boat operator that had me donning a wetsuit and slipping into the water. Whales swam so close I had to tuck my legs in. Exhilarating doesn’t even begin to describe it. While the swimming experience was amazing, when I got out and watched from the boat I had a different equally amazing view.  Those whales were so curious about the strange human creatures.  They kept popping up their heads and eyeballing us (that’s called spy hopping).

After lunch at Café Balena (I had fish but not one I’d seen in the water) at the boat harbour, I boarded Tasman Venture, a larger vessel with multiple decks. The perspective was different, but the whales? Just as curious and playful. The afternoon whales were just full of joy, relaxing in the water and rolling from side to side like pussy cats, exposing their stomachs for a scratch.

Why it works: Doing two tours in one day gave me a rare chance to compare styles — intimate water-level encounters versus panoramic deck views. Either way, Hervey Bay proves why it’s the whale-watching capital of the world.

Day 5 – Scenic Flights Over Fraser Coast Highlights

Finish your Fraser Coast itinerary with a helicopter flight over K’gari, Lake Mackenzie, and Hervey Bay with whales waving goodbye below.

On my last day, I eased in with a beachfront breakfast at Aquavue Café, watching kayakers paddle the glassy waters. Then came the finale: a helicopter flight with Great Ocean Helicopters, soaring over K’gari, the Maheno Wreck, Lake Mackenzie, and Butterfly Lake.

As if scripted, three whales surfaced beneath us, rolling and playing in the water. A perfect full-circle ending.

Why it works: Scenic flights give you the ultimate perspective of just how vast, wild, and beautiful this region is — the perfect way to end a five day Fraser Coast itinerary on a high.
