Planning your North West Tasmania Trip
One of the best ways to experience North West Tasmania is on a leisurely road trip that allows time to explore both the iconic sights and the hidden gems. Peppers Silo Hotel, Launceston
Beginning or ending your North West Tasmania road trip in Launceston? This is where I’d stay. Peppers Silo Hotel transforms heritage grain silos on the banks of the Tamar River into one of Tasmania’s most distinctive luxury hotels. The spacious rooms retain plenty of character, with exposed concrete walls that give a subtle nod to the building’s industrial past while feeling warm, stylish and surprisingly cosy.
My favourite rooms overlook the Tamar River. It’s the sort of view that encourages you to slow down over breakfast before hitting the road. Then there’s Archie, the hotel’s resident greeting dog. If you’re missing your own dog while travelling, his enthusiastic welcome is guaranteed to make you smile. Meet Archie, the Silo Dog.

Discovery Parks – Cradle Mountain
Staying at Cradle Mountain had been on my travel bucket list for years, and it didn’t disappoint. Discovery Parks Cradle Mountain is tucked into native bushland just minutes from the national park entrance, making it an ideal base for exploring one of Tasmania’s most iconic landscapes. Choose from cosy cabins, cottages and spa chalets, all surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the World Heritage-listed wilderness.
For me, this stay was every bit as memorable as the destination itself. We were lucky enough to have sunshine, which made Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain look even more spectacular. After a day exploring in the crisp mountain air, there was nothing better than sinking into the spa bath while looking out over the lightly snow-dusted landscape. Add an excellent restaurant on site and plenty of wildlife wandering past, and it’s the sort of place you’ll wish you’d booked for longer.

Risby Cove, Strahan
Strahan is one of those places that deserves more than the overnight stop I experienced. Perched on the shores of Macquarie Harbour, Risby Cove is the ideal base for discovering Tasmania’s wild West Coast. From here, you can step aboard the iconic Gordon River Cruise, ride the historic West Coast Wilderness Railway through ancient rainforest (I did, and it was fabulous), or simply wander Strahan’s picturesque waterfront before returning to your boutique suite.
I loved the understated luxury of my room, especially the deep spa bath beside a large picture window overlooking the bay. Best of all, nobody walked past, so I could soak in complete privacy while taking in the peaceful harbour views.
One of my favourite touches came shortly after check-in. Once I’d unpacked, a local gin and tonic and a platter of Tasmanian cheese were delivered to my room, allowing me to settle into an armchair beside the fireplace and simply relax.
My stay was far too short. We had to leave before 7.30 am on a winter morning when it was only just getting light. Next time, I’d stay at least two or three nights to experience the Gordon River Cruise, explore more of Strahan’s fascinating history and spend longer admiring the artwork displayed throughout the hotel.

Corinna Wilderness Village
If you’ve ever wanted to completely disconnect from the outside world, Corinna Wilderness Village is the place to do it. Hidden deep within the ancient rainforest of takayna / Tarkine, the historic miner’s cottages and eco cabins offer a rare opportunity to slow down and immerse yourself in one of Australia’s last great wilderness areas. There’s no television, no mobile reception and plenty of opportunities for bushwalking, kayaking and exploring the pristine Pieman River.
For me, staying at Corinna was a true digital detox. Once I realised there was no internet to distract me, I relaxed into the rhythm of the rainforest. One of the highlights was cruising along the Pieman River to where it meets the Southern Ocean. There, enormous piles of driftwood line the beach, creating an unforgettable landscape. Walking along the sand, we spotted the tracks of wombats and wallabies, a reminder that this is one of Australia’s great untamed places. If you love nature, wildlife and the feeling of being completely removed from everyday life, you’ll find Corinna incredibly special.

The Inlet, Stanley
Stanley is one of Tasmania’s most charming historic villages, and while it’s tempting to stay right in town, I’d recommend looking just beyond it. The Inlet offers stylish waterfront accommodation overlooking peaceful tidal waters, giving you the best of both worlds. You’re only a few minutes’ drive from Stanley’s historic streets, The Nut and its renowned seafood, (I’m looking at you, Hursey Seafoods) but at the end of the day you can retreat to complete peace and quiet.
We stayed here for two nights, and it was one of the most relaxing parts of our journey. During the day, we explored Stanley and the surrounding region, then returned to watch wallabies grazing in the golden afternoon light from our accommodation. The tranquil setting, beautiful water views and slower pace made it the perfect place to unwind. It’s a reminder that sometimes staying just outside a popular destination gives you a far richer experience than staying right in the middle of it.

Sol at Sisters Beach
If you’re travelling with family or a group of friends, Sol at Sisters Beach is the kind of place you’ll wish you’d booked for longer. Located just a short stroll from the beach and bordering Rocky Cape National Park, this beautifully appointed holiday home has everything you need for a relaxing coastal escape. It’s an ideal base for exploring the north west coast while enjoying all the comforts of home.
I loved how thoughtfully this house had been designed. After a day of exploring, you can unwind in the outdoor sauna, soothe tired feet with the foot massager or fire up the barbecue for a long dinner together. There’s also a huge bath with plenty of magnesium salts you can enjoy a good soak.
There are kayaks for getting out on the water, gaming options to keep everyone entertained and a dream kitchen that’s equipped for everything from a quick breakfast to a family feast. While it’s not absolute beachfront, the beach is only a short walk away, making it easy to enjoy ocean swims, coastal walks and spectacular sunsets before returning to your own private retreat.

The Cove Tasmania
The Cove Tasmania is one of those rare places that exceeds every expectation. Perched on the clifftops overlooking Bass Strait near Devonport, these adults-only luxury cabins offer spectacular ocean views, complete privacy and a peaceful setting that’s perfect for beginning or ending your Tasmanian adventure. It’s an ideal stop before boarding the Spirit of Tasmania or after arriving on the island.
What surprised me most was how much wildlife surrounded the property. Little penguins nest throughout the grounds, and all you have to do is step outside your cabin to watch them returning home at dusk. My cabin was beautifully appointed, with a deep bath perfectly positioned for a long soak after a day exploring the coast. At the top of the hill, the restaurant serves excellent lunches and dinners with sweeping ocean views, while a spacious guest lounge provides a welcoming place to relax if you’re travelling with friends. I loved every moment of my stay and could easily have lingered for several more nights.
